Project Details

Masjid al-Harām is the oldest known masjid on earth (Āl al-Imrān 3/96). With the expansion during the reign of Hazrat Uthman, its area reached 4482 m22and it is recorded that the first portico was built at this time. The Masjid al-Harâm, which underwent various additions over the centuries, took its final architectural shape during the reigns of Selim II and Murad III with the projects prepared by Sinan the Architect.

In 984 AH (1576), the old flat wooden roof of the Harem-i şerif, which was organized according to the classical Ottoman architectural style, was replaced by a large number of mahrûtî domes. While maintaining the characteristic of the courtyard as an open space, small-scale domes with "müzehhep alem" domes were used, passing through a series of porticoes to a second inner courtyard. During the reigns of Mahmud I and Abdülhamid I, the porticoes were decorated with calligraphy plates and ornaments.

Within the scope of the Restoration of the porticoes, which started in 2012, interdisciplinary methods are used in accordance with the projects prepared through historical and scientific research. In the restoration works, traditional and modern techniques were used, the bases and capitals of all original marble columns were dismantled and taken under protection by recording the inventory. . In the dismantled parts, the reinforced concrete parts that were added later were removed. Restoration works were carried out in which the dismantled original elements were brought together.
