Project Details

The collection of buildings built in the name of Sheikh Zafir of Libya, the Sheikh of the Shazeliyya Order, consists of a lodge, guesthouse, shrine, and library. The mosque takes its name from the Ertuğrul Regiment to which it was allocated for prayers. Built by Abdulhamid II, the main building, which includes the mosque-prayer hall, sultan's chamber and men's section, was constructed in 1887.

The building has a seating area of 571 m2 in a large courtyard of 1417 m2. It is a two-storey wooden carcass building on a rubble stone foundation with a gable roof covered with tiles. Coated with wood from the outside, the facade is decorated with wooden profiles, moldings and furrows on horizontal and vertical axes, giving it a plastic appearance. It was determined that a minaret was added to the mosque, which did not have a minaret when it was first built, before 1905. The shrine, library, and fountain structures added to the mosque in 1905-1906 belong to Architect Raimondo d'Aronco. The mosque was extensively repaired by the Foundations Administration between 1969 and 1973.

Within the scope of the Restoration works, the structure was suspended because of the intensity of the damages in the load-bearing system of the building, the parts that had lost their properties were replaced, and those in good condition were strengthened. The roof was fortified, the unqualified parts of the wooden facade coatings, roof cover, wooden doors and windows were removed, and the damaged parts were renewed with original materials. The deficiencies of the original hand drawings were completed, and protective measures were taken. In the yielded ceilings ornamented with damaged hand drawings, cleanings and repairs were made and they were completed in line with the original sections. The Restoration was completed with the landscaping.
