Gazhane Museum
Project Details
Gazhane complex is one of Turkey's most important industrial heritages. The use of gas in Istanbul began during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid in 1853 with the lighting of the Dolmabahçe Palace. The Yedikule Gas House built in 1880 and the Kuzguncuk Gas House built on the Anatolian side were opened, and when these facilities became insufficient after a while, they were replaced by the Kadıköy Hasanpaşa Gas House, which opened in 1891. Inaugurated in 1891, Gazhane responded to Istanbul's gas demand for 102 years. Because of the decrease in gas demand over time, Hasanpaşa Gas House was closed on June 13, 1993 In 1996, with the initiative of the residents of the Hasanpaşa neighborhood and professional chambers, work was started for Gazhane. In 2001, it was registered as a Cultural Heritage in Need of Protection.
In 1981, when it was first put into operation, the complex, which included a steel gasometer with a capacity of 6,000 m3, a furnace made of steel and masonry bricks, a coal depot, workshops and administrative buildings, was expanded by adding various industrial and administrative buildings using steel, masonry bricks, reinforced concrete or a combination of these systems in line with the increasing needs over time. When the first gasometer was insufficient, steel gasometers with a capacity of 10000 m3 were added in 1938 and 30,000 m3 in 1963.
In the restoration works of the Gazhane Complex, different restoration techniques were preferred in accordance with the conditions of the buildings within the complex. In the existing buildings, strengthening and consolidation of the original walls, floors and foundations, removal of unqualified additions, repair and Restoration works were carried out in damaged parts, and steel reinforcements were applied inside the gasometers. The buildings that do not exist today were built in line with their original state. The Restoration of the buildings and the exhibition and landscaping works of the energy museum have been completed. Gazhane Complex, which is an important center of attraction for Istanbul despite being surrounded by dense construction, has been put into service as one of the most important social service areas in Kadıköy with its cultural center, museum, theater and social areas.
